Welcome everyone...take a walk...a healthy walk. Most walkers/joggers find a concrete path. In my dictionary, stay away from concrete and treadmills. Your knees, hips and ankles will sooner or later show the terrible results. Many doctors are directing
people of all ages to walk/run on a soft path, in woods, a beach or sand dunes, or a track. Some trainers are leading the way and running barefoot on blacktop. Every Sunday I walk for an hour. Uphill, downhill and flat. Before and after I invest 5 min. rotating my knees and hips and ankles...5 min. each. At home or my office, I walk around in my stocking feet...I put shoes on when company arrives. Shoes are restrictive. We need to activate the nerve endings in our feet. www.secondwindfitnessfilm.com

VIA CROSS TRAINING
Welcome everyone...for the past 18 years, cross training has played a major role in 1) mental fitness 2) attention to the particulars 3) muscle confusion 4) total body motion and readiness 5) confidence.
The mix...water aerobics, martial arts, racquetball, tennis, basketball, softball, weights, sprinting uphill and downhill, sprinting in water, on sand and grass barefoot. Technique, posture and form...critical. Two hour workouts were max. As I near my next competition, workouts were cut to one hour a day. all workouts were complimentary to event motion. When you can perform a drill one way...design that same drill to a 4 way drill. These workouts take total commitment and dedication. No excuses.

Injury Prevention
Welcome everyone...why is it that athletes incur so many injuries? And it isn't limited to just one sport...it's all sports. Viewing tons of film, one can quickly pick out flaws in the warm ups and cool downs. Let's begin with the feet. Athletes spend a ton shoes. Shoes are restrictive. Naturally you have to wear shoes in competition. The book, "Born to Run" illustrates how people native to Africa run barefoot. During my intense workouts, (3x a week) I train barefoot, on a football field. This training helps make the feet stronger and the ankles. Watching NFL players warm up, all players were doing the same drills. Why! Stretching and other drills should have the same motion as when you perform in a game. Called Muscle conditioning. I can't claim to completely eliminate injuries, however rehab is not the best class to be. By the way, a doctor in NY has his patients run barefoot on a blacktop road.

UP CLOSE
Hello and welcome everyone...there is a solution for sports non contact injuries and stress fractures. As a personal/athletic trainer and participate in several sports, the question is... why so many.
Yes, athletes are faster and stronger than ever before...or so I've
heard. From my close up look, this is what I see. Athletes from all
the sports are doing the same warm up drills. Today there are subtle
changes for introducing "sport specific" drills. Not enough! Drills
in the off season and pre game warm ups. This holds true for anyone (non pro) who is training/exercising. So, more emphasis needs to be placed on drills that mirror "game movement" for the position one plays. Take football...why would a QB, RB, WO or DB perform the same drills as a lineman. Why would sprinters do
the same warm ups as long distance runners? This conditioning
applies to "fire up" the brain. The brain must send the right signal
to the right set of muscles to perform "ON DEMAND." The brain
needs to practice "game movement signals." Final thought...all of us
need to spend more time with our shoes off. Shoes are restrictive.

Under Water
Hello and welcome everyone...let's continue our "ultimate challenge" series. Awhile ago I devoted a blog to the Navy Seals
training. For the past five years I have relied on sprinting (barefoot)
on the beach and in water. Let's begin in the water. Sprinting in waist high water...this is resistant sprinting, staying on the balls of my feet and keeping with the sprinter's form for 30 seconds. Ten
sets. Mix in plyometrics...staying in waist high water, squat and
spring up with arms reaching above your head...ten times. Always
on the balls of your feet, never land flat footed. Bring knees up to
your chest when you spring up. These water drills will develop
your fast twitch, leg strength and endurance. Drills can be done in
a shallow pool. Sprinting on the beach...barefoot, 30 meters, ten
sets, on the balls of your feet. Sand forces you to work harder. This
is a high impact workout. No matter what your sport is or your goals, these drills will get you there.

THE JOURNEY!
Hello and welcome everyone! For me, the journey for next year's Senior Olympics and The
Nationals begins this week. I have selected seven meets to compete in for 2011. For the next
three months emphasis will be on conditioning. Am incorporating TRX into the mix. Also
adding water aerobics. This type of training will be challenging to say the least. Plyometrics
will also be part of the program.
Health tip...walk around the house in your stocking feet...forward and backwards. This will
relax your feet and legs. And you will feel refreshed mentally. We experience stress in our
lives on a daily basis...we need to find ways to release the stress. Deep breathing exercises and
walking barefoot or in our stocking feet will help.
