Why so Many Injuries?

Welcome everyone and let's get started...physical therapy  has become the hot occupation...thanks in large degree to muscle pulls and stress fractures. And due to us...yes, we are the large contributors. Pro athletes and Seniors also are guilty. OK why? Lack of prep time, body education, lack of know how, show off and there are more of us into fitness. How to limit/prevent injuries. Include BALANCE drills on a daily basis. Working  your entire body with emphasis on foot drills. Gradually moving from flat terrain to hills, sand and water. Jumping...if you land flat footed, you add weight to the foot and cause undue stress. NO, I do not agree that because we jump higher and we are stronger...that's what causes fractures. When we first learn to jump, why don't I hear about stress fractures or muscle pulls? Vary your fitness drills and cause muscle confusion. Don't fall victim to muscle memory. Training on hills (about 30 ft. elevation) and sand has helped 100's of men and women avoid injuries. I can attest to that. I have trained 1,000"s of men and women of all ages in my "Balance Your Life" classes. Happy Landing. Jimmy O www.secondwindfitnessfilm.com.

VIA CROSS TRAINING

Welcome everyone...for the past 18 years, cross training has played a major role in 1) mental fitness 2) attention to the particulars 3) muscle confusion 4) total body motion and readiness 5) confidence.
The mix...water aerobics, martial arts, racquetball, tennis, basketball, softball, weights, sprinting uphill and downhill, sprinting in water, on sand and grass barefoot. Technique, posture and form...critical. Two hour workouts were max. As I near my next competition, workouts were cut to one hour a day. all workouts were complimentary to event motion. When you can perform a drill one way...design that same drill to a 4 way drill. These workouts take total commitment and dedication. No excuses.

ON LAND and WATER

Welcome everyone...I call certain drills...Crazy Time. Start w/a bungee cord. Affix one end to something sturdy and the cord should be heavy duty and according to your weight. Place the 2 handles, one in each hand and move away from the fixed object 'til cord is taught with your back to the fixed object. Keep walking away
until you are at capacity, hands are waist high. Hands can be waist high, shoulder high or bending knees and keeping waist high. You can also do this drill facing the fixed object. High impact...with 3 feet of slack, sprint. Try and increase your distance w/each attempt. You can also do this sideways with crossover steps. 3 sets each way
with 5 to each set. Next drill...sprinting in water about 3 ft. deep for about 10 m. Knees can be in or out of water. Do 10 times. Next, sprinting in sand. Go easy on this one, your quads will have a work out. These drills will challenge your every muscle. I do these drills once each week...they made me stronger, faster and have more stamina. Even walking through the above will help.

MINDSET

Hello and welcome everyone...thank you for your questions and
comments. Let me address a few of your concerns...pain, pain relief and injury. In the world of sports, competing, training and
working out, our greatest fear is injury and pain. These fears not only affect our performance, but also our mindset. The culprit for
me...pulled hamstring and groin muscle. Through observation as
an athletic trainer and tons of research, I will summarize some of
my findings. Poor technique and a LACK of water, cologen and
hydration cause most of the problems relating injury, stress and
pain. Imbalance of muscle is the real culprit. I see poor technique
in the weight room, runners, sprinters, bikers and exercise routines.
Rehab is no fun. Read an article by Sue Hitzmann...she writes,
"daily repetitive movement and postures causes connective tissue
to dehydrate and over time stress and inflamation." Then we
encounter sleepless nights, anxiety, digestive issues and depression.
Not a pretty picture. Hope this helps.

30% LOSS

Hello and welcome everyone...can you feel the heat. Take your mind off the heat...zero in on your workout and what you want to accomplish. In this hot weather, stretch more, not less. Humid
weather can cause as much as 30% loss in muscle power and
schrinkage. Water alone is not enough. Your body needs electrolytes, nutrients and potassium and salt. Try this...one quart of water,  1/2 teas. of salt, 1/2 teas. of baking soda and 3 tesa. of sugar...add a little of your favorite juice or a little lemon juice if
you need flavoring. After your workout, drink a glass of skim or
1% choc. milk or almond or coconut choc. milk. Recover faster.
All of the above will help eliminate or greatly reduce cramping.
Stay tuned...you will be glad you did.
